Quick answer: what changes in MTG in early 2027?
Two big Magic: The Gathering changes arrive with the first set of 2027, Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which releases on 5 February 2027 (prerelease events from 29 January):
- Standard rotates. Six sets from 2023 and 2024 leave the format as Standard moves to its 2025–2027 card pool.
- God packs arrive. Starting with Nauctis, about 1 in 1,000 regular Boosters and 1 in 300 Collector Boosters will be “god packs” containing only rares and mythic rares.
The most important point for PlayVault customers: rotation only affects Standard. Commander does not rotate. If you mostly buy Commander decks, Universes Beyond boxes or cards for casual play, Standard rotation does not make your cards illegal.
Part 1: the 2027 Standard rotation
How Standard rotation works now
Standard is Magic’s rotating format. Wizards moved Standard to a longer, roughly three-year card pool, and the annual rotation lines up with the first set of the calendar year. When that set arrives, the oldest year of sets leaves. There was no rotation in 2025 or 2026, so 2027 is a big one.
From Nauctis onwards, Standard is built from sets released in 2025, 2026 and 2027, plus Magic: The Gathering Foundations, which stays Standard-legal until at least 2029.
What rotates out?
Do not buy into these sets purely for Standard unless you are comfortable with their short remaining Standard life.
| Set | Released | After 2027 rotation |
|---|---|---|
| Wilds of Eldraine | 2023 | Leaves Standard |
| The Lost Caverns of Ixalan | 2023 | Leaves Standard |
| Murders at Karlov Manor | 2024 | Leaves Standard |
| Outlaws of Thunder Junction, including The Big Score | 2024 | Leaves Standard |
| Bloomburrow | 2024 | Leaves Standard |
| Duskmourn: House of Horror | 2024 | Leaves Standard |
What stays?
Standard-legal sets from 2025 and 2026 stay, along with new 2027 sets as they release, and Foundations stays until at least 2029. On our shelf, that means products such as the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Play Booster Box (recently around Dhs. 580), the Final Fantasy Play Booster Box (recently around Dhs. 879) and the Spider-Man Play Booster Box (recently around Dhs. 559) are the safer Standard-facing direction than the rotating 2023–2024 sets.
For any specific card or set, check Wizards’ current Standard legality page before buying for competitive play.
What rotation does not touch
Rotation is a Standard rule, not a Magic-wide rule. Cards from rotating sets stay playable wherever else they are legal:
- Commander: no rotation. Commander legality is governed by its own ban list, not by Standard rotation.
- Pioneer, Modern, Legacy and Vintage: non-rotating formats with their own card pools and ban lists.
- Casual play: your kitchen-table group plays whatever you agree on.
So a Bloomburrow Commander deck or an Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander precon does not become useless because Standard rotates. Commander players should not panic-buy or panic-sell because of a Standard announcement. Not sure which format you play? Read what MTG Commander is.
If you play Standard: what should you buy now?
- Do not buy rotating sets only for Standard. They can still be fun to open, but their Standard life ends in a few months.
- Build around 2025–2026 sets plus Foundations. That is the core of the post-rotation format.
- Wait before buying expensive singles. A big rotation changes the strongest decks, and the first weeks of results matter.
Part 2: god packs are coming to Magic
On 5 October 2026, Wizards of the Coast announced a major booster change for 2027. Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, all-rare and mythic boosters — god packs — enter Magic’s normal booster line-up.
| Regular Booster god pack | Collector Booster god pack | |
|---|---|---|
| Odds | About 1 in 1,000 packs | About 1 in 300 packs |
| Contents | A god pack celebration card plus 14 rares and mythics, four of them Booster Fun versions (two of those foil) | A god pack celebration card, a foil land and 11 rares and mythics, mostly foil and Booster Fun versions |
| Starts with | Nauctis, February 2027 | Nauctis, February 2027 |
| Universes Beyond | From 2028 | From 2028 |
The odds matter. One in 1,000 boosters is extremely rare: a 30-pack box gives you 30 chances, so the large majority of boxes will contain no god pack at all. Do not buy a box assuming it will have one.
The other booster changes
The god-pack headline hides a few structural changes that affect every pack:
- Play Boosters are being renamed Boosters. Wizards is simplifying the naming.
- Regular Boosters lose their guaranteed foil. Common and uncommon foils are removed, and foil rares and mythics become more frequent instead.
- Collector Boosters lose three lower-rarity foils — two foil commons and one foil uncommon — shifting the focus further toward the cards collectors chase.
- Universes Beyond follows later. According to the announcement, god packs start with Magic’s own worlds, with Universes Beyond sets from 2028.
- No price increases were announced alongside the changes.
What this means if you are buying sealed MTG now
- Current boxes will not contain god packs. Anything released before Nauctis keeps the booster configuration it was printed with — including the Marvel Super Heroes and The Hobbit boxes on our shelf.
- Current Collector Boosters are the last of the old structure. Some collectors may prefer the old version, some the new one. Nobody knows yet.
- Do not chase a 1-in-1,000 event. Open boxes because you like the set, not because you expect the rarest pack. Our honest view on sealed product as an asset is in do sealed booster boxes hold value?
What to buy now, by player type
- Commander player: buy the Commander deck or Universes Beyond product you actually want — rotation is not your problem. Start with our best Commander precons and 20 most-played commanders guides.
- Standard player: focus on 2025–2026 sets and Foundations rather than cards leaving Standard in 2027.
- Collector: decide whether you prefer today’s Collector Booster configuration — such as the Spider-Man Collector Booster Box (recently around Dhs. 1,799) or Marvel Super Heroes Collector Booster Box (recently around Dhs. 2,199) — or want to wait for the new Nauctis-era structure.
- Opening for fun: buy the set you like. God packs are a bonus, not a plan. MTG booster boxes explained covers what each box type gives you.
