Pokemon TCG: Sword and Shield High Class Pack — VMAX Climax (set code: S8b) was released in Japan on December 3, 2021 as the annual High Class Pack for the Sword and Shield era. VMAX Climax is widely regarded as one of the most beloved and replayable Japanese High Class Packs ever produced, alongside Shiny Star V, and remains highly sought after over three years after its original release. The full set contains 285 cards — 184 main set cards, 28 Character Rares, and 73 Super Secret Rares of various types.

VMAX Climax is built around two landmark collector mechanics. The first is Character Rare cards — full art cards depicting an iconic Trainer alongside their partner Pokemon in a single shared scene, a format that had not appeared since the Black and White era. The set features 28 Character Rares including fan-favourite pairings such as Flaaffy with Elesa, Zekrom with N, Gardevoir with the Doctor NPC, and Eevee with Bill. The second is Character Super Rare cards, a brand new rarity introduced in this set, featuring even more premium full art Trainer and Pokemon pairings. The most iconic of these is Red with Gigantamax Pikachu — widely considered one of the most desirable cards in the entire Sword and Shield era. Every single booster pack guarantees at least one Pokemon V, VMAX, or V-UNION card, plus either a Reverse Brick Holofoil or Character Rare, plus one guaranteed Holofoil Energy card — making dead packs impossible. The set also includes the legendary God Pack mechanic, where rare configurations yield multiple Super Secret Rare cards in a single pack.

Top chase cards include Red's Pikachu VMAX CSR (the most iconic card in the set), Marnie's Grimmsnarl VMAX CHR, Charizard VMAX CSR, Mew VMAX CHR with Genesect, Rayquaza VMAX CHR with Gym Trainer, and the Morpeko V-UNION CSR — a unique four-card set that assembles within the same pack.
