Aetherdrift (DFT) Play Booster Box | 30 Packs
Magic: The Gathering — Aetherdrift (set code: DFT) is a Standard-legal Magic: The Gathering expansion released on February 14, 2025 and the 103rd Magic expansion in the game's history. Aetherdrift is Magic's first full set built around the racing genre — a high-octane multiplanar death race across three planes of the Magic Multiverse: Avishkar, Amonkhet, and Muraganda. The story follows Chandra Nalaar competing for the Aetherspark — a powerful artifact that could change everything — against a field of rivals from across the Multiverse, each representing one of ten racing teams tied to Magic's five colors.
Ten racing teams from across three planes compete in the Grand Prix, each aligned to a two-color combination and a distinct racing style — giving the set one of the most flavorful and cohesive Limited environments of 2025. The teams range from the aether-powered engineers of Avishkar to the sun-scorched riders of Amonkhet to the primordial creature-mounted racers of the prehistoric Muraganda. For players who enjoy building a themed deck around a specific identity, Aetherdrift's team system makes deck construction unusually intuitive.
Two new mechanics define how Aetherdrift plays. Start Your Engines is a triggered ability that activates once you attack with two or more creatures in a single turn, unlocking upgraded versions of your cards' effects for the rest of the game — representing your racing team reaching full speed. Exhaust lets you activate powerful abilities on your permanents for a significant effect, but only once per game — a mechanic that rewards careful timing and punishes wasting your one shot. Both mechanics reward aggressive, forward-moving play and give Aetherdrift a distinctly different feel from control-oriented sets like Duskmourn or Lorwyn Eclipsed. The Cycling mechanic also returns in this set, offering strategic hand manipulation and deck consistency that pairs naturally with the racing theme.
The set makes heavy use of Vehicles and Mounts — two creature-adjacent card types central to the racing theme. Vehicles require crews of other creatures to activate, while Mounts can be saddled by paying a cost to become creatures themselves. Both card types have dedicated support across the set's mechanics, making Aetherdrift one of the most Vehicle and Mount dense sets in Magic's history.
Every Aetherdrift Play Booster Box includes a First-Place Box Topper — a 2-card bonus pack containing 1 Rare or Mythic Rare in a new gold foil treatment and 1 Full-Art Basic Land card. This Box Topper is exclusive to booster box purchases and is not found inside individual packs. Play Boosters may also contain Special Guest cards (SPG 84-93) — 10 powerful reprints from Magic's history appearing at mythic rare frequency with new Aetherdrift-themed artwork. The headliner chase cards are the Borderless Graffiti Giants — a cycle of iconic Gods and Gearhulks rendered in vivid street art graffiti styling, appearing in under 1% of individual Play Boosters. The Serialised Aetherspark — a one-of-a-kind headliner card appearing exclusively in Collector Boosters — is the rarest card in the set.
One honest note for buyers: Aetherdrift was the lowest-selling standard set of 2025 among Magic's mechanically new releases, and its racing theme is more niche than the horror of Duskmourn or the detective fiction of Murders at Karlov Manor. For players who enjoy aggressive vehicle-based strategies and the Start Your Engines mechanic in Commander or Standard, it delivers genuine value. For collectors, the Borderless Graffiti Giants and the First-Place Box Topper gold foil treatments are the primary collector draws.
